Hetzner PHP 4 discontinuation

Realmdigital’s hosting partner, Hetzner has recently announced the discontinuation of PHP 4 on their web servers from the 17th November 2009. Although this has been in the pipeline for some time, it is important for clients hosting with Realmdigital or directly with Hetzner to be aware of how this change can affect them.

What is PHP?

PHP is a programming language used for building dynamic websites. A dynamic web page provides an interactive experience, as the page can change in response to different contexts or conditions.

PHP 4 versus PHP 5

PHP 5 is the new improved version of PHP filling the shoes of the outdated PHP 4 which has been supporting websites since 2000.

PHP 5 offers a host of improvements to the aging PHP 4 including security fixes and speed, stability and usability enhancements. PHP 5 also provides developers with a host of new tools to allow them to make more powerful websites.

What does this mean for you?

In 2007, Zend Technologies announced the discontinuation of PHP4, meaning that security updates for PHP4 will no longer be available. Hetzner continued to offer support for websites running on PHP4 websites until November 2009.

Due to this discontinuation, websites running on the Hetzner infrastructure and any version of Platform earlier than version 4.2 will cease to function once the servers are upgraded to PHP5.

Realmdigital will be contacting all our customers on support to discuss this move over the next month.
