This year was the 5th annual E-Tourism Event in Cape Town, an event that brings hundreds of destinations and travel suppliers, members of the hospitality industry, and others of the thriving tourism sector in South Africa, together to discuss technology and tourism. The major focus of this year’s event was to educate how social media is used to leverage online bookings; and also for those in the industry to sample the latest online and mobile technology available. Five years ago the panel of speakers were urging these same collectives just to get their businesses online.

As a member of Angelhub I recently had the opportunity to be on the advisory board of judges of the 2011 Tech4Africa Samsung Apps Ignite. This event is aimed at giving start-up businesses the exposure and chance to pitch their product or demo to an audience of techy users, investors, customers and journalists, in the hope of creating traction and sparking potential funding. Andy Hadfield, founder of Real Time Wines, with his retail mobile app for reviewing wines came first place – awarding his business start-up $5000.

To celebrate the momentous launch of their newest version of the Creative Suite, the Adobe team travelled the world spreading the news and demoing the improvements and new additions in their Web Tour. I was fortunate enough to catch the Cape Town launch at the Convention Centre on the 21st of June, my chance to witness firsthand the inner workings of the new improved software.
